It can also vary for one person depending on many factors such as variability in anatomy, hydration, hormonal levels, medications, and overall circulatory health. It is completely normal to need to add lubrication all of the time, occasionally, or at different points during a menstrual cycle or lifespan.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">Other structures like the clitoris, the penis, and the anus, do not self-lubricate, so adding lubricant creates less friction during stimulation which can increase pleasure and decrease the chance for injury to the tissue. font-family: var( --e-global-typography-secondary-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-size: var( --e-global-typography-secondary-font-size ); font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-secondary-font-weight ); letter-spacing: 0px;\">Types of Lube:<\/span>\n\n<strong><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">Water-Based (or aloe-based):<\/span><\/strong>\n<ul>\n \t<li><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">Can be a thicker gel (may feel sticky, but also has more &#8220;bulk&#8221; to it which is sometimes desired)<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">Some can be thin and more &#8220;natural&#8221; feeling (less sticky, less bulky)<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">Compatible with all toys and condoms <\/span><\/li>\n \t<li><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">Relatively inexpensive<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">Widely available<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">May require re-application (or adding water) because it absorbs into the skin<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">Watch for irritating ingredients (see below)<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li>Moisturizing (depending on the osmolality, see below for a brief explanation)\n<ul>\n \t<li>&#8220;Iso-osmolar&#8221; means that the lubricant will not have a drying effect for the vulvar tissue (important if you have vaginal dryness)<\/li>\n \t<li>If a lubricant has an osmolality number that is higher than the vaginal&#8217;s osmolality of ~290 mOsm\/kg, it can pull moisture out of the tissue<\/li>\n \t<li>Osmolality numbers lower than the vagina&#8217;s osmolality can hydrate the tissue<\/li>\n \t<li>These numbers are not typically found on the product information section and might require more investigation if you want to make sure your lubricant is non-drying (<a href=\"https:\/\/goodcleanlove.com\/blogs\/good-clean-love\/what-is-osmolality-and-how-does-it-affect-your-vaginal-tissues\">HERE<\/a> is a helpful article and chart if you want to learn more)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<strong><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">Silicone-Based:<\/span><\/strong>\n<ul>\n \t<li><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">Thin (can feel &#8220;barely there&#8221; and doesn&#8217;t tend to feel sticky)<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">Long-lasting<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">Doesn&#8217;t absorb into the skin, <\/span><\/li>\n \t<li><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">Not compatible with silicone toys <\/span><\/li>\n \t<li><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">More expensive (but goes a long way)<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">Might stain sheets\/clothes<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">Needs to be washed off of skin<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li>Does not absorb into the skin (does not add moisture into the skin)<\/li>\n \t<li>Can make an exceptionally slick place on the floor if spilled (that is difficult to get rid of on hardwood)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<strong><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">Hybrid:<\/span><\/strong>\n<ul>\n \t<li><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">Mixture of water-based and silicone <\/span><\/li>\n \t<li><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">Hydrating and long-lasting. <\/span><\/li>\n \t<li><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">Some have a cloudy appearance (for some this is a bonus, others prefer clear, but cloudiness is normal for this type of lube)<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li>See features of both above<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<strong><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">Oil-Based (natural oils):<\/span><\/strong>\n<ul>\n \t<li>Fantastic for external use and massaging<\/li>\n \t<li>These are frequently recommended as vulvar\/vaginal moisturizers and lubricants, however, the research does not point to them being safer, or healthier than using high quality water-based or silicone-based lubricants and so we generally recommend not using oils on mucosal membranes (the genital skin that does not grow hair).<\/li>\n \t<li>Not compatible with condoms<\/li>\n \t<li>Not compatible with silicone toys<\/li>\n \t<li>May cause changes in the natural microbiome and these changes may increase your chance of infection (bacterial vaginosis, yeast, etc.)<\/li>\n \t<li>Widely available, as they are natural oils (coconut oil, almond oil, etc)<\/li>\n \t<li>Will stain sheets and clothing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<strong><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">Petroleum-Based (like Vaseline):<\/span><\/strong>\n<ul>\n \t<li><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">Unless specifically, medically advised for a condition, petroleum-based lubricants are not recommended for internal use. <\/span><\/li>\n \t<li><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">They increase the risk for bacterial vaginosis and are generally advised for &#8220;external use only&#8221;.\u00a0 <\/span><\/li>\n \t<li><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">They can break down toys<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li>They can break down condoms<\/li>\n \t<li>They stain sheets and clothes<\/li>\n \t<li>Need to be washed off<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"_04xlpA direction-ltr align-start para-style-body\"><span class=\"JsGRdQ\"><strong>These things may be irritating (so avoid them)<\/strong>:<\/span><\/p>\n\n<ul>\n \t<li><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">Flavored lubes<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">Heating or cooling lubes<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">Parabens<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">Glycerine<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">Propylene glycol<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li>Look for &#8220;iso-osmolar&#8221; on the labeling (that&#8217;s a GOOD thing)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">Selection Tips<\/span><\/h2>\n<strong><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">Massage &amp; Non-genital:<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"JsGRdQ\"> Oils can be great for this! They stay slippery, but keep them off of the mucous membranes.\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<strong><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">Use with toys:<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"JsGRdQ\"> Silicone toys can be damaged with silicone lube. Water-based lube will be fine with just about any toy. Silicone lube is great with toys that are metal, glass, or plastic.\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<strong><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">Use with a penis:<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"JsGRdQ\"> If the penis is bare, then water-based or silicone are fine. If the penis is <\/span><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">not<\/span><span class=\"JsGRdQ\"> penetrating an orifice, then oil-based can work. (see &#8220;condoms&#8221; below)\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span class=\"JsGRdQ\"><strong>Use with condoms<\/strong>: <\/span><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">Water-based or silicone-based lubes are less likely to damage condoms.<\/span>\n\n<strong><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">Anal Use: <\/span><\/strong><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">Water-based lube works great because of its thickness. Silicone is long-lasting. Hybrids have both features. The key is to use a generous amount and keep it close to reapply as needed.\u00a0<\/span>\n\n<span class=\"JsGRdQ\"><strong>Sensitive Skin<\/strong>:<\/span><span class=\"JsGRdQ\"> Make sure you&#8217;re avoiding the list of irritants. TEST your lubes with just a small amount externally before using a large amount internally.
